その代りに；そうではなくて《◆通例文頭・文尾で用いる》

I didn't let her go to the concert. I bought her a book instead. 彼女をコンサートへ行かせずに， その代りに本を買ってやった(＝I bought her a book instead of letting her go to the concert. ).

〔ひきかえに〕 instead (of that); for that; in return; in exchange; 〔一方で〕 on the other hand.

●あなたが来られないのなら, その代わりに弟さんを来させてくだい. If you cannot come, let your brother come instead.

・そのチョコレートちょうだい. その代わりこの飴あげる. Give me that chocolate. I'll give you this candy in return.

・昇格はしたが, その代わり責任も重くなった. Although I've been promoted, my responsibilities have got all the heavier for that.

・金は貸そう. その代わりというわけではないがあの件については黙っていてくれ. I'll lend you the money. This has got nothing to do with it, but don't say a thing about that other matter, will you?

・値段は少し高いが, その代わりもちがいい. This one is a bit expensive, but to make up for that it'll last long.
